Garrick Zoeter

 
 

The young American clarinetist Garrick Zoeter's passionate and exciting way with the clarinet has been acknowledged around the world.  The Boston Globe has described Mr. Zoeter as a clarinetist that "makes every note go through major life changes", while that Yellow Springs News (Ohio) recently wrote that Mr. Zoeter's "breath control, intonation, and range of dynamic shading were simply incredible.

Garrick

Garrick received his Bachelors degree from the Juilliard School as a student of Charles Neidich and his Masters degree from Yale University as a student of David Shifrin. He made his solo debut at the age of seventeen in Weber's Concerto #1 with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. He has won numerous competitions including the International Clarinet Society International Clarinet Competition. He has collaborated with highly diverse artists such as Trio Solisti, The Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, and the Ensemble for the Romantic Century. An avid fan of contemporary music, Garrick has given the American premiere of works by such composers as Krzysztof Penderecki and Betsy Jolas. He has had works written for him by John Mackey, Ezra Laderman, and Antonio Ribeiro.


Garrick additionally performs extensively with his wife, soprano Mariana Mihai-Zoeter in concerts featuring a wide repertoire for soprano, piano, and clarinet. They recently had the honor of performing concerts in the unique Teatro Amazonas in Manaus, Brasil and the Teatro do Paz in Belem, Brasil.


An active teacher as well as a performer, Garrick currently serves as the Ana Lee Van Buren Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia. At Shenandoah he teaches a class of over 20 clarinet students, performs with the Van Buren resident Woodwind Quintet, is often heard as a soloist with the Symphony and Wind Ensemble, and teaches and performs as a part of the Shenandoah Performs summer festival.
Past teaching engagements have included serving on the faculty of the Festival Eleazar de Carvalho in the city of Fortaleza, Brasil (summers 1997-2003) and Wesleyan University (clarinet and chamber music 2002-2007).


In 1996 Garrick co-founded the chamber ensemble Antares while as a student at Yale. The following year the ensemble won the top prizes in the Fischoff, Coleman, and Yellow Springs chamber music competitions. In 1998 they captured the silver medal at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. In 2002 Antares was awarded the top prize in the Concert Artists Guild competition in New York City in recognition of its exciting and emotionally charged performances. Since that time Antares has been performing throughout the United States to consistently rave reviews.
